Story: Mahabaleshwar Temple & Shivling
After receiving a boon from Lord Shiva, King Ravan while going back to Lanka, passed through the Sahyadri Mountain Range. He was carrying a Shivling with him.
Two drops of water fell from the Shivling on the ground, which gave birth to two demons, ‘Atibal’ & ‘Mahabal’.
These demons created havoc. To stop them, Lord Vishnu killed a demon named Atibal, but could not kill the demon Mahabal.
Lord Shiva intervened, killed demon Mahabal, and blessed this place, now known as Mahabaleshwar
This temple is said to be constructed in the 13th century, by King Sinhdev, and was again renovated by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 16th century. He also weighed his mother Jijabai on a scale and donated that money to the villagers living in the area.
The villagers returned that money to King Shivaji, which was used to build the Pratapgad Fort.
There is a tradition of not offering a flower named Kevda in this temple.
Celebrations are held on three occasions at the temple. The first occasion is ‘Rang Panchanmi’, the second occasion is ‘Tripura Poornami’ and the third occasion is ‘Navratri’, apart from the daily puja.
It is believed that water from five rivers is present in this temple.
Those rivers are Krishna River, Koyna, Venna (Veni), Savitri, and Gayatri.
The self-populated Shivling at Lord Mahabaleshwar Temple is believed to be as old as 5000 years, also known as Mahabaleshwar Shivling. This Shivling has countless holes in it, making it appear like a Rudraksha, and feels positive when touched with bare hands.
